This Week in Audiobooks

I have been meaning to write a wrap-up post about the NBAs, but at this point I feel as though all my strength is going toward surviving until the four-day weekend. Although I believe a relative is expecting me for the holiday, I think I'm going to beg off and hole up at home.

In the meantime, I have been devouring audiobooks because the arrival of winter weather has nearly doubled my commute. A book on tape makes the drive bearable. It took to about halfway through Stephen King's Dreamcatcher before realizing that I have already both read the text and seen the movie. Obviously, either occasion wasn't memorable enough to keep me from grabbing it on tape. I wish I hadn't remembered the movie, though, since now I can't get the image of Donnie "Duddits" Wahlberg's bald head out of my mind. Now that's horror.

Well Book Mistress, I tried but failed the audiobook test.

I brought the audiobook you sent me on a 9 hour drive from NC to FL. I listened for AT LEAST 11 minutes and could not focus whatsoever. Maybe I'm not a good multitasker, but at 70 plus mph, it was just a distracting noise I kept tuning out.

Oddly, I can listen to This American Life on NPR while driving and follow those stories easily..... is radio less of a listening commitment?

I couldn't help but drop a comment after reading the Stephen King remark! Funny I used to be a big fan of his work, but somewhere along the way, either I changed or his books just started blending into one, kind of like the first time I bought an offspring cd, all them years ago, there are 1 or 2 songs that stand out, but the rest are all just mediocre and seem to sound the same, but with a different title.
I have never listened to an audio book for more than a few minutes, something about the voices on there just feel strange to me. I think it is because I read so often that I am just used to the sound of my own internal voice!
Great blog you have here, hopefully one day you may have a read of my novel, I am writing and publishing it in my blog as it unfolds.
I will be back to read more, god knows I could use a few new choices of quality books to read!

I too have trouble with concentrating on e-books while driving. I think I'm subconciously rebelling against the idea since I enjoy sitting with my favorite beverage and turning the pages on a great book!

Some audiobooks are great. Terry Pratchett novels are hilarious because the narrator is so droll. The Life and Times of The Thunderbolt Kid is read by the author which makes it so much better.

On the otherhand, I'm listening to The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman and it is painfully tedious.
